Ready To Learn

Evaluation of after-school literacy programme 'Ready To Learn' shows it led to improved reading accuracy and comprehension, better linguistic phonics and pupils less likely to display problem behaviour.

Barnardo's NI recently launched an evaluation of its Ready To Learn after-school literacy programme at the Long Gallery, Parliament Buildings, hosted by Michelle McIlveen MLA, Chair of the Education Committee. The evaluation, carried out by the Institute of Child Care Research at Queen's University, found that the additional literacy intervention made a positive difference to children's reading and comprehension, better linguistic phonics and also impacted on their behaviour wtih pupils less likely to display problem behaviour. Ready To Learn was a three year randomised control trial carried out in nine primary schools in Belfast, Antrim, Ballymena and Larne against seven control schools, it was funded by Atlantic Philanthropies and led by an international advisory panel including Professor Tim Shanahan, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at University of Illinois at Chicago.
