Patients Help Launch Brain Tumour Awareness Week

Brain tumour patients, and their families, from across Northern Ireland helped to launch International Brain Tumour Awareness Week ,1-7 November, in Derry's Guild Hall this weekend, in order to generate awareness of the support available to those affected by a brain tumour in Northern Ireland. Supporters of the Brainwaves NI charity were invited by the Mayor, Councillor Paul Fleming, to the city's Guildhall on Halloween to highlight the issues associated with brain tumours and to promote the services offered for sufferers and their families.

Currently, statistics on brain tumours in Northern Ireland exclude sufferers of non-malignant tumours, which carry their own serious medical implications. During Brain Tumour Awareness Week, Brainwaves would like to highlight this and attempt to dispel the myths surrounding tumours, offering support and guidance to those concerned.

Speaking during the trip, Maggi Whyte, chairperson of Brainwaves NI, said, "We are very pleased to launch Northern Irelands first Brain Tumour Awareness week.  There is a great need to highlight the support and information available to those living with a brain tumour in Northern Ireland, and we would encourage anyone affected to get in touch withus."

Derry City Mayor, Paul Fleming, said he was delighted to help launch the first awareness week during the city's unique Halloween celebrations, "It's important that patients and their families are given the opportunity to enjoy some respite. I fully support the work being done by Brainwaves NI, not only to offer support to patients and their families, but to help raise awareness of this important issue and the support that is available."
