The Promise of Mediation has been the single most significant influence on the modern ADR movement. This brilliant work serves as a constant reminder that mediation is about more than settling cases.
James Alfini, President and Dean, South Texas College of Law, Houston, Texas.
In the ten years since Bush and Folgers wrote The Promise of Mediation, they have gaines experience and grown in clarity regarding transformative mediation. It is clear that transformative mediation is here to stay and that it will continue to have a profound and enriching impact on the field.
Sharon Press, Director, Florida Dispute Resolution Centre, and former President, SPIDR.
As a mediator and trainer of many years standing, I found that I had a great deal to learn from Joseph Folger regarding the transformative approach to mediation. It has indeed transformed my approach to mediation and training and to the people with whom I interact.
Jane Gunn, Corporate Peacemaker.
The Promise of Mediation has profundly influenced the way in which we deliver both our training and mediation services. Rather than focus on a written agreement as the only measure of a successful mediation, we know, from many years of working in this field, that mediation can transform relationships on a much deeper level. The impact of mediation is often only felt after mediation, when the parties have had time to digest their new knowledge and understanding of themselves and each other.
Alex Efthymiades, Director of Consensio.
Joseph Folger is a Professor of Adult and Organizational Development at Temple University in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. He is a co-founder and fellow of the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation (www.transformativemediation.org). He has designes and delivered the USA Postal Service REDRESS mediation program, and conducted assessment and benchmarking research for numerous organizations and mediation agencies. He has worked extensively as a third party intervener in organizational, community, court and small group disputes. He is the co-funder of Temple University's Conflict Education Resource Team - a peer mediation program for Temple University students. He won the Peacebuilder of the Year award from the New York State Dispute Resolution Association in 2006.
Professor Folger has published extensively in the areas of communication and conflict, mediation, and third party intervention processes. His books include the award winning volumes, Working Through Conflict: Strategies for Relationships, Groups and Organizations (7th edition, with M.S. Poole and R.K. Stutman) and The Promise of Mediation (with R.B. Bush, 1st and 2nd editions). The Promise of Mediation has been translated into six different languages. He co-edited (with R. A. Bush) Designing Mediation: Approaches to Training and Practice within the Transformative Framework and most recently co-edited (with R. A. Bush and D. DellaNoce) Transformative Mediation: A Sourcebook - Resources for Conflict Intervention Practioners and Programs (published by the Association for Conflict Resolution & the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation).
Transformative mediation is an approach to conflict intervention that supports constructive transformation of the parties' conflict interaction. Rather than controlling or limiting the parties' interaction, transformative practice supports people in their attempt to interact with each other in a way that allows them to make their own decisions based upon greater deliberation and understanding. Parties create settlements and other outcomes through their own efforts at gaining greater clarity about themselves, each other, and the differences they need to address.
