Lidl, Northern Ireland's No 1. discount retailer, is supporting its dedicated charity, the Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF), with the placement of clothing banks in selected stores. Customers shopping at the Ballyclare, Ballynahinch and Magherafelt stores are now able to do their bit and dispose of unwanted textiles while raising vital funds for UCF. These special clothing banks offer shoppers the opportunity to recycle clothing, household textiles, paired shoes, handbags and belts conveniently while doing the shopping.
Joyce Savage, Head of Appeals and Marketing from UCF said, "We are delighted to be working with Lidl again on another valuable fundraising campaign. Placing clothing banks at selected Lidl stores makes textile recycling more accessible to the local community and generates vital income to help support local people who have been affected by cancer. In Northern Ireland, one in three people will develop cancer during their lifetime and around 10,700 people are newly diagnosed every year. UCF's work is only possible due to the generosity of local people who raise almost all the £4m needed annually to provide UCF's care and support services, free of charge, to cancer patients and their families in Northern Ireland."
Lizzie Lumsden from Lidl Northern Ireland is delighted the retailer can lend a hand, "this clothing bank scheme is a fantastic opportunity for shoppers to help out. Lidl and UCF continue to join forces to raise much needed funds for the charity and to increase awareness of cancer by educating people on how they can reduce their risk of the disease." She concluded, "Lidl aims to raise maximum funds through various initiatives across Northern Ireland involving both staff and customers."
The clothing bank scheme is one of the numerous activities Lidl Northern Ireland is involved with to support its collaboration with UCF - a partnership which is now in its second year. Lidl has devised an educational programme (also in its second year) in primary schools called the Lidl Fit Factor, which is aimed at all primary 3 and 4 classes and is designed to help teachers inform their class about the importance of the key areas essential for healthy development. Lidl's charitable involvement is all part of the company's corporate and social responsibility programme, 'On the Way to a Better Tomorrow'. Lidl and UCF are committed to building a healthier, brighter future for Northern Ireland. Log on to www.lidl.ie for further information.
