Join in National Probono Week – 3 – 7 November 2014

The 13th annual National Pro Bono Week (NPBW), will take place between 3 - 7 November 2014 and organisations across Northern Ireland are invited to take part.

CAPTION: Niall Hargan, Solicitor, Carson McDowell who supported Headliners by providing advice on a lease for its offices with Denise Cranston, ProHelp Programme Manager, Business in the Community. During Probono Week (3 – 7 November), Business in the Community is calling for businesses to get involved by joining its ProHelp list of businesses or tell their story about work they are doing in the community and voluntary sector.

Each year Business in the Community uses this week to highlight the breadth and impact of pro bono work undertaken by professional firms and businesses throughout the year.

Pro bono is derived from pro bono publico, which is Latin, “for the public good” and refers to professional services that are delivered without any expectation of a fee to organisations that serve the social good. It started off in the legal profession but is now common in a wide range of professions including marketing, technology, Human resources and many more.

Denise Cranston, ProHelp Programme Manager with Business in the Community explains: “We are proud to play a key role in brokering the professional and business skills of Northern Ireland companies to assist the social and economic regeneration of communities.  We believe that businesses thrive when they invest time, expertise and resources in the communities in which they operate.

“The reduction in European and grant  funding means that the community and voluntary sector needs to become more professional, more efficient and competitive and therefore more business-like.  Businesses involved in our ProHelp and Business on Board programmes are providing advice and support to third sector organisations, helping them become more sustainable.

“This ongoing support and assistance to help local groups become more sustainable will ultimately help to transform local communities through the provision of services, facilities and support for local residents, and is more important than ever. We want to help more companies find ways to get involved and we also provide a platform to shout about achievements”

Three probono events are already lined up for next week including:

  • Northern Ireland Young Solicitors Associations delivering a series of information sessions throughout the week, within businesses, on How to Make a Will
  • The launch of a new initiative – Heritage Sector Workshops - to help organisations in the heritage sector, to maximise funding opportunities within the private sector (a limited number of spaces are still available). This event is being supported by BT
  • Board training provided by Arthur Cox Solicitors for business people who would like to learn more about the responsibilities and benefits of sitting on the board of a community or voluntary organisation

Many businesses and communities are already experiencing the benefits of giving their time and expertise to complete a vital project. Can you use Probono Week to kickstart your support.
