Healing Through Remembering (HTR) is promoting a Day of Private Reflection on Monday 21 June 2010. The organisation has organised the day annually since 2007. You, your group or organisation are encouraged to share in this important opportunity.
The Day of Reflection is a day for personal and private reflection on the conflict in and about Northern Ireland; a day to acknowledge the deep hurt and pain caused by the conflict, to reflect on our own attitudes, on what more we might have done or might still do, and to make a personal commitment that such loss should never be allowed to happen again. It provides a voluntary opportunity for everyone in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Great Britain and further afield to reflect upon the conflict in and about Northern Ireland and the future that is before us.
Healing Through Remembering commissioned independent evaluations into the 2007, 2008 and 2009 Days of Private Reflection. Each year the evaluation has strongly recommended that the opportunity to mark the Day should again be promoted. According to the evaluators, the Day:
"... is increasingly seen as positive by many and non-threatening by others" and "... interest and support came from across the community and was embraced by groups and individuals from both of the main traditions."
Examples of activities in 2009 included making and flying kites with personal messages on them, unveiling a wishing well in a garden and walking up to Cave Hill for the day.
On 21 September, HTR will be holding a conference to consider aspects of the Day of Reflection. Those who have taken part, or who have thoughts on issues relating to the Day, are welcome to join for a discussion on the future of the Day.
