Colin Glen Forest Park will celebrate its 20th Birthday with the winning of the Green Flag Award from the Civic Trust for the second year in a row.
The Green Flag Award is the national standard for quality parks and green spaces. Much like the blue flag status awarded to beaches the Green Flag is a means of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces throughout the UK and Ireland and is the benchmark of excellence for public parks.
Councillor Charlene O'Hare a director with Colin Glen Trust and Gerard McLaughlin the Trust Heritage officer travelled to collect the award at a ceremony on Bournemouth.
David Raymond, Chairman of the Voluntary Board of Directors of Colin Glen Trust stated that winning the Green Flag for the second year highlighted not only the high quality of the park but the Trust's commitment to deliver environmental education and events in partnership with the local community.
Charlene O'Hara added that she welcomed this honour and the judge's special praise for the Trust's commitment to developing a high quality community open space and the involvement of the local community in the management of the park. The new Heritage Trail opened this month is another example of the services offered at Colin Glen.
Tom Reisly a Civic Trust judge stated that in all his years as a judge he could not recall a park that had such a high level of community involvement as that at Colin Glen Forest Park.
Tim Duffy, Chief Executive of Colin Glen Trust stated "we are again delighted to have obtained this award for the second year which reflects on the work of our staff and volunteers who manage and maintain this excellent community resource. This however would not be possible without the support of our funders and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency who working in partnership with the local community has helped to restore civic pride in this part of the city".
