Charities likely to celebrate Vodafone's SMS donation decision

Vodafone has become the first UK mobile operator to pass on 100 per cent of all charitable donations made through SMS. UK charities will now receive the full amount donated by Vodafone customers when they give £1 or more through a five-digit 'short code'

According to the mobile network operator, SMS donations made by its users will be passed on in their entirety to charities if they total £1 or above.

Commenting on the organisation''s decision, the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) chief executive John Low believes that it marks a welcome development.

John Low, chief executive of the Charities Aid Foundation, said charities "would celebrate this announcement".

He added: "Donating by text is popular because it is instant and easy for donors, but in the past high charges have put donors and charities off. It is very generous of Vodafone to commit to processing donations for free."

Michael Carlin , managing director of instagiv . www.instagiv.com a mobile donation solutions provider who launched a new suite of mobile donations products at the IOF National convention commented  ' The announcement by Vodafone  to move to 100% is wonderful news - all operators are now passing 90% + of text donations on to the charities and we hope that Vodafone have set the new benchmark. With the  exponential growth and ease of text messaging and direct access to 66m UK mobile phones, donating by text is now a viable fundraising mechanism for charities of all sizes. Supporters can now donate whenever and wherever they want'
