An Introduction to Personal Independence Payments

Wednesday, 6 April 2016 -

10:30am to 1:00pm

The Welfare Reform Act received Royal Assent at Westminster on the 8th of March 2012 and introduced significant reforms to the Social Security Benefit System including the abolition of Disability Living Allowance for working age people in favour of a new benefit known as a Personal Independence Payment. This ½ day course will detail the two components of PIP, the basic conditions of entitlement, special rules and provide a full introduction as to how entitlement to PIP is assessed.

Who Should Attend: 

The course is recommended for advisers and other colleagues who have baseline knowledge of the Welfare Benefits system particularly those who have previous awareness of Disability Living Allowance.

Fees: 

There is a charge of £30 to Advice NI Members, £45 to Voluntary and Community Sector organisations and £65 to Private and Statutory Sector organisations.

CPD Hours: 

There are 3 CPD hours available for this course.

Education/Professional Framework: 

This course can be used as evidence towards a range of units in our Advice and Guidance NVQ’s and Legal Advice qualifications including ‘Understanding the Importance of Legislation and Procedures’ (Unit 30). It is also linked to the National Occupational Standards for Legal Advisers including ‘IB19 – First Line Welfare Rights and Legal Advice’. Progression routes: This course is linked to our “Welfare Reform Training Programme” and can be studied with two other courses linked to welfare reform subject matter (see Welfare Reform Training Programme for further details).

An Introduction to Advice Pro

Tuesday, 12 April 2016 -

10:30am to 4:30pm

This one day training course provides an introduction to Advice Pro, a secure case managment application. Effective case management is an integral part of the advice provision process. The practical course is designed to provide advisers with a good understanding of the features and functionality that Advice Pro has to offer.

Who Should Attend: 

The course is designed for advisers using the Advice Pro case management system

Fees: 

There is a charge (per person) of £100 to Advice NI members, £135 to Voluntary and Community Sector organisations and £175 to Private and Statutory Sector organisations.

CPD Hours: 

There are 6 CPD hours available for this course

Education/Professional Framework: 

This course can be used as evidence towards a range of units in our Advice & Guidance NVQ's and Legal Advice qualifications including Manage Personal Case Load (Unit 14). It is also linked to the National Occupational Standards for legal Advisers including IA2 - Manage legal Advice Cases.

Budgeting Skills and Tools for Debt Advisers (G)

10:30am to 4:00am

This generalist level course will provide you with an understanding of budgeting skills including: what budgeting is, why budgeting is important, assessing a situation including essential and nonessential expenditure, how to budget, budgeting tips and common budgeting tools. It is linked to the e-learning Common Financial Statement course.

Who Should Attend: 

Wiseradviser courses are appropriate to anyone currently working with vulnerable clients facing financial difficulties.

Fees: 

All Wiseradviser courses are FREE to members of the following MAT partner agencies: • Advice NI • Citizens Advice NI • Step Change • Institute of Money Advisers (IMA) However, for accredited courses a £55 charge is applied for those seeking OCNNI accreditation (Note: this is £80 for the Insolvency course, which has 4 modules). Accreditation is currently optional for accredited courses but the paperwork must be completed for MAS accreditation.

CPD Hours: 

This course is worth 6 CPD hours.

Education/Professional Framework: 

As explained above Wiseradviser training can enable participants to demonstrate that they meet the requirements of the Money Advice Service quality framework for individuals. This framework is mapped against a variety of NOS, so by achieving the relevant training advisers can demonstrate that they meet the NOS associated with that activity set (see pathway on page 21). The Advice Work activity set, for example, covers 9 NOS including ‘First Line Money and Debt Legal Advice/ Casework’ and ‘Provide and Receive Referrals on Behalf of Clients’. The courses link to a range of NOS beyond those covered by the MAS quality mark, including ‘Providing First Line Consumer Legal Advice/Casework’, ‘First line Housing Legal Advice/Casework’, ‘First Line Mental Health Legal Advice/Casework’. The Wiseradviser courses can be used as evidence towards a range of units in the Advice and Guidance and Legal Advice qualifications. This includes ‘Negotiate on Behalf of Clients (Unit 11), ‘Support Clients to Make Use of Advice and Guidance Services’ (Unit 2), and ‘Present Cases for Clients in Formal Proceedings’.

Accreditation: 

There are three levels to Wiseradviser training – Generalist Level (G) (provides basic principles of money advice), Skilled Level (S) (develops skills and knowledge of generalist money advisers), and Specialist Level (SP) (helps advisers deal with more complex cases). Most Wiseradviser courses are accredited with OCNNI at Level 3 or 4 and we will apply for the Skillsmark endorsement within the coming year. See individual courses for further details. Learners must meet pre-entry requirements for skilled and specialist Wiseradviser courses. These can be found at www.wiseradviser.org

Understanding Age Legislation and Social Policy in Ageing

This detailed and comprehensive session will focus on the legal and social policy framework of aging and includes: Age Legislation in Northern Ireland including employment law and Age Ageing and Social Policy Becoming a more Age Friendly organisation Understanding demographic change and the aging population. This workshop will include practical simulations for best practice in drawing up Age Positive recruitment campaigns, a policy discussion on the potential for goods facilities and services legislation in Northern Ireland and an examination of Age Demographic change on a global level and how it affects the policy agenda.

The course is designed for anyone working with or employing older people.

Debt Relief Orders: Approved Intermediaries & Complex Cases (S)

This skilled level course follows on from pre-course materials available on www.wiseradviser.org. The course is only relevant to those who are training as an Intermediary with an approved Debt Relief Order Competent Authority and those who have done so. In this workshop you will review case-studies and explore the role of the intermediary in more detail. This course is a module of the Insolvency Options course accredited with OCNNI at Level 3.

Creating and Improving your Lone Working Policies

Employers have a legal duty of care to do as much as possible to keep their staff safe. Employees, who are well trained in how to detect, react to and report potential risks and acts of aggression or violence are better equipped to make safer, more rational choices in the face of aggression and violence at work and can manage the aftermath of such incidents and report on them more effectively. Our full day training course aims to raise your organisational awareness in best practice for lone working and will enable you to develop the skill set to formulate best practice polices in lone working and personal safety for dissemination to your staff or review your existing policies. The course will include the provision of best practice template materials for your organisations use including a 75 page lone working manual.

Who Should Attend: 

The course is designed for managers and supervisors of staff who work with clients and the general public or others within the organisation involved in policy development or lone working issues.

Fees: 

There is a charge of £75 to Advice NI Members, £95 to Voluntary and Community Sector organisations and £125 to Private and Statutory Sector organisations.

CPD Hours: 

There are 6 CPD hours available for this course.

Education/Professional Framework: 

This course can be used as evidence towards a range of units in our Advice and Guidance NVQ’s and Legal Advice qualifications including ‘Develop and Manage Interviews with Clients’. It is also linked to the National Occupational Standards for Legal Advisers including ‘SFJ GC9: Contribute to the prevention and management of inappropriate behaviour’.
