ADVICE NI BRINGS KEN LOACH'S PALME D'OR WINNER ‘I, DANIEL BLAKE’ TO BELFAST

The film, made by legendary British director Ken Loach has a particular resonance for Advice NI and its clients as it deals with issues relating to welfare reform and the austerity agenda’s impact on ordinary people. ‘I, Daniel Blake’ has been described as a gripping, human tale about the impact one man can make.

Advice NI Director Bob Stronge, who himself has been with the organisation throughout each and every one of its 21 years of service to people across Northern Ireland, said that he’s particularly delighted to host the pre-screening of a film by a director who has captured the reality of poverty and hardship in UK society for decades.

“Over the 21 years during which Advice NI has worked to help ordinary people across Northern Ireland, we have seen the human impact of poverty, austerity and societal dysfunctionality. We have been at the coal face of helping people deal with the issues which most of us can happily ignore – how to I feed my family, how do I cope with crippling debt, what will we do if we lose our home? I’m proud that we’ve made a real and measurable difference to the lives of tens of thousands of people during that time. As such it’s fitting that we get to honour the career of a director who has striven to shine a light on the reality of the lives which many of our clients live every day – Ken Loach. This film has been widely praised for its sense of reality and of hope, and I’m delighted to announce this screening”

The film follows the life of Daniel Blake (59) who has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the first time ever, he needs help from the State. He crosses paths with a single mother Katie and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie’s only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn’t know, some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern day Britain.
