JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:                       Childcare Supervisor

HOURS:                             20 hrs per week

SALARY;                            £16,345.60 pro rata per annum

DURATION:                       Maternity Cover

RESPONSIBLE TO:          Surestart Co-Ordinator                              

REPORTS TO:                   Surestart Early Learning Co- Ordinator / Surestart

                                            Co-Ordinator/Senior Manager Ashton

LOCATION:                         SMILE Surestart

TO COVER:                        Smile Surestart Areas

                                            Duncairn, Mount Vernon, Shore Crescent, New Lodge,

                                           Waterworks, and Chichester Park SOA1.           

JOB SUMMARY

The Childcare Supervisor will be based with SMILE Surestart and be responsible for overseeing and organising the delivery of childcare to support programmes in the Surestart area. The Childcare Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day running of the childcare and ensuring that there is a high quality, safe, caring and welcoming environment for children and their families.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. The supervisor is responsible for the overall safety and well being of the children and for implementing the child-minding and day-care minimum standards and adhering to the principles of the Children’s (NI) Order.
  2. The supervisor is responsible for calling regular staff and planning meetings in order that staff will be fully aware of their roles and the progression of play.
  3. The supervisor is responsible for the support and supervision of staff on a day-to-day basis.
  4. In consultation with the staff, the supervisor should ensure that planning and preparation is carried out and that the activities offered throughout the session allow the children to experience appropriate play activities for their age and stage of development.
  5. The supervisor will support children and families in the SureStart area and work with existing organisations to support parents in the promotion of good quality play experiences for their children.
  6. The supervisor should ensure that an appropriate environment is provided for children and the premises used are tidy when the session ends. 
  7. The supervisor is responsible for keeping up-to-date records as stipulated by Belfast Health & Social Care Trust, Department of Education, Surestart managers and Ashton.
  8. The supervisor will encourage the active participation of all parents in the group, ensuring they are kept informed of their child’s development.
  9. The supervisor will attend relevant ongoing training courses and evening meetings as planned.  This may require attendance at evening meetings. 
  10. The supervisor will partake and help with the organisation of special events, outings, visits, and fundraising activities as planned.
  11. The supervisor reports to the Early Learning Co-ordinator and may be required to give reports to the Management Committee.  The supervisor will assist the Early Learning Co-ordinator in the induction of new staff.
  12. The supervisor must implement the child protection policy / confidentiality policy.
  13. Keep the first aid box replenished and ensuring equipment is maintained and safe to use.  The supervisor will ensure the overall safety and well being of the children.
  14. Keep up-to-date records i.e. daily register of attendance, an accident book, a plan of group activities, carry out risk assessments and complete records required by Belfast Health & Social Care Trust, Department of Education, Surestart and Ashton.
  15. Implement the written policies and procedures of the project.
  16. Attend staff team meetings.
  17. Attend to any other reasonable duties relevant to the post.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

Qualifications and experience

  • NVQ Level 3 early years’ care and education or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 1 years experience managing a childcare project working with children aged 0-3 years.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge and understanding of child development and the needs of children and their families
  • Knowledge and understanding of the importance of parental involvement
  • Good observation and record keeping skills.
  • Knowledge of SureStart

Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Willingness to work at different locations
  • Demonstrate an ability to travel to different locations in the Smile SureStart.

Personal Attributes:

  • Possess Good listening skills
  • Have patience and understanding.
  • Be approachable

Desirable

  • BA (Early Childhood Studies) or equivalent or working towards.
  • First Aid certificate
  • Relevant training in management of early years’ settings and/or observation and records keeping
  • Experience working with children with special needs
  • Music / art / craft skills
  • Knowledge of High/Scope and Birth to Three Matters
