The role will seek to develop the evangelistic witness of Garnerville Presbyterian Church into the local community by identifying and utilising opportunities, developing relationships and building on existing activities.

Responsible to: The Minister and Kirk Session of Garnerville Presbyterian Church

Responsible for: The development of the evangelistic witness of Garnerville Presbyterian Church into the local community.

Summary of the role: To work in the local community identifying and utilising opportunities, developing relationships and building on existing activities to promote and produce genuine outpourings of the Christian Faith.

Main tasks/responsibilities of the position:

  • To engage in and develop relevant expressions of Christian community/Christian church within the community. 
  • To Identify and assess the needs of the community in relation to Garnerville Presbyterian Church and In partnership with the Kirk Session, develop and continually review a strategic plan.
  • To plan and deliver evangelistic courses and other initiatives with the minister and others.
  • To engage in and develop effective working partnerships with other agencies in the local area.
  • To build bridges between the church and the local community by supporting ecumenical initiatives.
  • To assist in worship leadership at the request of the Minister.
  • To attend Kirk Session, Congregational Committee and Presbytery meetings as appropriate.
  • To communicate to the Kirk Session and congregation information and vision for the work regularly.
  • To contribute fully to the ongoing Ministerial appraisal process.

This is subject to 2 references and the successful applicant will adhere to the Safeguarding, Child Protection and other relevant policies of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.

Criteria – Essential

Qualifications/Attainments

  • Qualified to degree level, or similar, in Theology and/or community work

Relevant experience

  • 2 years experience within a similar role or setting
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all ages and types of people, with individuals and groups using highly developed interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrable ability to encourage good practice in working with and motivating volunteers
  • Ability to work unsupervised with readiness to use own initiative

Special attributes

  • Sympathetic to the Christian faith and to the ethos of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland

Qualifications/Attainments

  • Qualified to accredited level or similar in community work

Relevant experience

  • Understanding of and experience in working in areas of social deprivation
  • Knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of family life and the particular issues facing families today
  • Ability to engage with people who have little or no church connection
  • An understanding of the value of Christian based caring strategies as they relate to the wider community
  • A commitment to partnership working, maintaining and developing links with other churches and local organisations
