Good Start to the Disability Year
The official launch of the European Year for Disabled People was on 22 January 2003. Events are being organised across the UK in conjunction with it.
The UK theme is ‘Promote Rights and Participation’. Sub-themes in support of this include, raising awareness of disability, participation of people with disabilities in society, promoting advocacy/mentoring.
The year has been organised by the National Coordinating Committee (NCC) and the Department of Works and Pensions (DWP), with Northern Ireland being represented on both groups. DWP has developed a grant scheme offering up to £10,000 for a local project or up to £50,000 for a Regional Project in support of the European Year of Disabled People 2003.
