As a consequence of European Union enlargement in 2004, Northern Ireland will no longer retain its status as a Transitional Objective One region. With the loss of status and the diminishing EU Peace Programme funds, this tour provided an opportunity for all sectors to look at the challenges facing Northern Ireland within this new funding environment and to explore new programme opportunities and partnerships.
Concordia funded this study tour under Measure 4.1 (Networking in Europe and Beyond) of the European Union's Peace II Programme and whilst aimed primarily at funding advice professionals, they scheduled a diverse range of lectures to cover the wide range of sectors taking part in the tour. This was done in the hope that these professionals would be better equipped to deal with the future funding needs of the four sectors.
The objectives of the tour were to: gain a better understanding of the European Union in general; explore additional / alternative EU funding sources beyond Peace II and the Building Sustainable Prosperity programmes; explore trans-national partnership and how this can enhance communities in NI; share our experience of EU funding; engender enthusiasm for future opportunities of EU funding and partnership with participants.
