The Big Lottery Fund awarded almost £500,000 to the Cliftonville Community Regeneration Forum for four years through the Reaching Communities Grant. “Let Youth Lead” is the name given to this initiative by young people from the Cliftonville/Cavehill and Antrim Road areas.

NICVA has planned a series of training events on policy engagement for the autumn/winter period.

Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has encouraged young people to register to vote. The Minister was speaking at the launch of Electoral Registration Week 2008.

Finance Minister Nigel Dodds is encouraging people to respond to the current consultations to improve the domestic rating system.

The Assembly returns from summer recess on 31 August. NICVA has been taking advantage of the gap in diaries by organising a series of meetings with MLAs and officials from political parties.

The CIVICUS World Assembly - a forum for international civil society representatives to exchange ideas and experiences and to collaborate on strategies for a just society – will take place in Glasgow from 18-21 June.

The Centre expresses its shock at hurtful comments made by Iris Robinson, MLA, about the gay and lesbian community in Northern Ireland.

Environment Minister, Arlene Foster, has asked MLAs to agree the Local Government (Boundaries) Bill which reached its Final Stage in the Assembly.

On 19 June the Assembly’s Social Development Committee will hold its weekly meeting at NICVA’s premises, 61 Duncairn Gardens, Belfast. NICVA will make a presentation to the DSD Committee on funding for the sector, as it has already done with the Finance and Personnel Committee.

As the Executive plans a new strategy, voluntary and community groups will be ahead of the game. They will consider how they can contribute to a cohesive, shared and integrated society at a conference organised by NICVA on 30 May. The only ethnic minority Assembly Member will be one of the speakers.
