Lecture on suicide risk in young adults

Northern Ireland Branch of the British Psychological Society Small Logo

Public lecture by Dr Rory O’Connor from the Suicidal Behaviour Research Group University of Stirling on ‘Adolescent and Young Adult Suicide Risk: Characteristics and Promising Treatments’.

Historically, suicide research has been conducted largely within the biomedical-illness model of health. As a result, it has been somewhat blinkered in its pursuit of the cause of a suicidal person’s underlying pathology.

This model of research is being replaced by a biopsychosocial model and in this presentation Rory will draw from experimental and field studies including a survey of more than 2,000 15-16 year olds, to illustrate the growing understanding of the psychosocial correlates of youth suicidal risk.

Correlates will include:

  • problem-solving,
  • future thinking,
  • autobiographical memory,
  • social perfectionism,
  • social support,
  • pessimism, and
  • impulsivity as well as lifestyle factors.

Implications for treatment, practice and suicide prevention policy will also be discussed.
