Making sense of the Assembly

Rural Community Network is running a workshop for groups throughout Northern Ireland on Wednesday 22 August to explain how the Assembly works. It will run from 10.00am to 1.00pm in the Community Relations Council offices, Linen Green, Dungannon.

Karin Eyben, policy officer with RCN, stressed the importance of attending the event:

"It is a valuable opportunity for rural groups to consider how they might make best use of the Assembly and how they might work effectively with MLAs on issues of concern."

The guest speaker will be Joe Reynolds, Deputy Clerk to the Assembly, and there will be a panel of local politicians to offer tips on what would be helpful for them in engaging with local groups.

This opportune workshop will include:

  • how the Assembly works, including the various types of debates;
  • the roles of the various scrutiny bodies such as statutory committees and standing committees;
  • how legislation is passed;
  • different ways local groups can have an input into Assembly business.

Michael Hughes, chief executive officer of RCN added:

"Responsibility for the decisions that impact on the people and communities which Rural Community Network represents now rests in the hands of locally elected and locally accountable MLAs and Ministers.

"An important part of making the most of the Assembly will be understanding what actually happens in Stormont. This is particularly important for groups in rural areas who might feel that the Assembly is a long way away from their own lives."
