The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) has appointed a new Chief Executive to lead its future development.

The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) has appointed a new chief executive to lead its future development. It has announced that Peter O’Neill, will take on the role. Mr O’Neill replaces Paddy Sloan, who stepped down earlier this year to take up a position with the BBC.

Currently the NIHRC Head of Information, Education and Development, Peter brings a wealth of human rights knowledge and managerial experience to his new post.

A graduate of Queen’s University Belfast, he completed an MSSc in 1997 also at this university and an Advanced Diploma in management at the University of Ulster in 2004. He is currently completing a LLM in Human Rights Law at Queen’s University Belfast. He was formerly employed by the Law Centre NI, and was a Director of the NUS-USI student movement.

Speaking today Peter O’Neill said:

"I am delighted to take up this position at this important time for the Commission and the human rights sector. We have many challenges to face together and I am looking forward to working with a committed team of Commissioners and staff in helping to build a human rights culture in Northern Ireland."

Professor Monica McWilliams, NIHRC Chief Commissioner, added:

"I am very happy to welcome Peter as the Chief Executive of the Commission. He will bring considerable enthusiasm, experience and knowledge to this new role and I look forward to working closely with him in this important phase of our development."
