The Draft Code of Governance is a key piece of work in developing standards of good governance in the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland.

Over 60 representatives from the sector gathered in NICVA to launch the draft code and also to look at some of the key questions around the Code of Governance:

  1. In what way could you see your organisation using the code?
  2. How would you like to see it taken forward now?
  3. What sort of support would be necessary for your organisation to take the code forward?

Speaking at the launch Seamus McAleavey, NICVA Chief Executive, said:

"While we don’t want to be seen as being in thrall to bureaucratic measures of governance it is important to ensure that organisations are sound and democratically controlled and do what they say they do. This is important not only to ensure that organisations are effective but also to ensure that the general public have confidence in the voluntary and community sector.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Developing Governance Group for taking responsibility for this key piece of work and all their hard work in developing this Draft Code of Good Governance that I’d urge all organisations to respond to."

Speaking after the launch Denise McCann, NICVA Member Services Manager said:

"The Code of Good Governance has been developed for use by all voluntary and community organisations, regardless of size or type of activity. The Code is intended to help and support management committees/boards and can be used as a useful tool for organisations that are reviewing their governance practice and systems.

"The Code has been very positively received by participants at its launch for consultation at the seminar 'Towards A Code of Governance'. The Developing Governance Group now look forward to receiving responses to this consultation document before the end of June."

About the Draft Code of Good Governance

Wendy Osbourne speaking at today's eventWendy Osbourne (VDA) speaking at the event

The Draft Code of Good Governance for the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland has been drafted by the Developing Governance Group. The draft Code has been adapted from the English Good Governance Code which has been adopted by the voluntary and community sector in England and Wales.

The Code is not intended to be mandatory, but rather, sets out best practice to help and support management committees/boards of any size. It is envisaged that voluntary and community organisations can state compliance with either the full Code or the principles of the Code. Organisations will be able to use the Code as a tool to develop good governance.

What’s different about the Code of Good Governance?

Unlike the National Occupational Standards for trustees and management committee members which was developed as a standard for individual trustees, the Code of Good Governance sets out the principles and practices of good governance in an organisation as a whole.

About the Developing Governance Group

The Developing Governance Group is a group of voluntary and community sector associations, working to improve the quality of governance in voluntary and community organisations in Northern Ireland.

It was formed following the Developing Governance Seminar in May 2006 at which it was overwhelmingly agreed that the sector needs its own set of standards in governance which must be led by the voluntary and community sector and not by Government.

The Developing Governance Group is currently made up of the following sector support organisations:

  • Age Concern,
  • Community Change,
  • Help the Aged,
  • NICVA,
  • NIPPA,
  • NITAP,
  • NI Sports Forum/NI Sports Council,
  • St John Ambulance,
  • Volunteer Development Agency and
  • Youthnet.
