First NICVA governance review completed

In September last year Banbridge and Craigavon Carers, a small Northern Ireland charity, decided to participate in a NICVA governance review. NICVA’s governance reviews look at the overall governance of the organisation including the main policies and procedures, whether the organisation is complying with their governing document and key legislation, basic financial procedures and strategic and operational planning.

The process

The process began for Banbridge and Craigavon Carers with an information evening where a member of the NICVA governance review team met with the committee and some senior staff members and dealt with any queries or concerns.

NICVA then interviewed committee and staff members and prepared and presented a governance review report in December with some recommendations on how the group could improve their governance. This included the provision of some practical tips, sample policies and procedures and suggestions for further training. All of this was aimed at strengthening the organisation’s governance procedures to help them meet the demands placed on them.

The outcomes

So how did the group find the review process and would they recommend it to other organisations? When key members of the organisation were asked these questions they gave a very positive response, all of them agreed that the process was very valuable, that bringing in an external organisation was helpful and that they would recommend the review process to other organisations.
