The Taskforce on Active Citizenship, launched by Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern TD, is entering a period of consultation.

The Taskforce on Active Citizenship has been established by An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern. It is expected that the Taskforce will report to government around the end of March 2007, ie within nine months of its first meeting. Its broad remit is to provide recommendations on how to ensure the continuation of a healthy civic society in Ireland. The Taskforce is chaired by Mary Davis, Chief Executive of Special Olympics Ireland, and includes twenty members drawn from a broad spectrum of interests and organisations across the voluntary and community, private and public sectors. The Taskforce members have decided that they will conduct a number of consultations to assist the drafting of recommendations to government including:

  • A written consultation process through the consultation document ‘Together, we are better’. Submissions should be received by no later than 29 September 2006.
  • A series of open workshop meetings which will take place in September, details of which will be announced shortly.
  • A series of focus meetings conducted by Taskforce members.
  • The Taskforce welcomes views on active citizenship in Ireland to help it prepare its report and recommendations.
