NIVT seeks lay members

The Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Commission is inviting applications for appointment as fee-paid ordinary (lay) members of the Northern Ireland Valuation Tribunal (NIVT). It is intended to make 10 appointments.

Ordinary members of the Northern Ireland Valuation Tribunal

The NIVT is an independent judicial body responsible for determining appeals from the Commissioner of Valuation for Northern Ireland, in respect of domestic rates and other rating appeals, including those relating to disability, education and lone pensioner rating relief. The NIVT consists of a President, a number of legal members, members with valuation experience and a number of ordinary members. All are appointed by the Lord Chancellor on a fee-paid basis. At any hearing the NIVT will be composed of three members, one from each category with the legal member presiding over the hearing.

Eligibility

Subject to the statutory requirement age for the office there is no age limit for this appointment. The statutory requirement age is 70 years and the Lord Chancellor will expect a reasonable period of service before retirement.

Applicants should note that the selection and assessment process will incorporate testing.

Fee

The fee per day for ordinary members is £162.50. The appointment is non-salaried and non-pensionable.
