Belfast Community Circus School presents Festival of Fools, Belfast's first international street theatre festival, 29 April - 3 May. For five days, Belfast city centre will come alive to the sounds of laughter as some of the best performers from around the world take to the streets.
For the past thirty years, cities around Europe have hosted Fools' Festivals. Drawing on centuries of tradition which have seen strolling players and troubadors entertaining kings and commoners wherever they travelled, a Festival of Fools brings together street performers, clowns and artists to celebrate the follies and foibles of life.
The first recorded Festival of Fools took place in Ancient Greece. The tradition was revived in the 1970s in Europe when Amsterdam hosted a Fools Festival which emphasised comedy and clowning on the streets. The Festival proved to be a great success in attracting tourists, keeping the people of Amsterdam happy and nurturing great street artists.
The aim is to bring laughter, joy and maybe even a bit of enlightenment to passers by. Belfast's Festival of Fools is the result of a collaboration between Belfast Community Circus School, Girovagando in Sardinia and the Goglerskolen in Aarhus, Denmark, which has been funded by the EU through its Culture 2000 programme.
The Festival begins with The Great Indian Rope Trick, Friday 29 April at 12.00pm in Cornmarket with a performance by Magician Isamudian.
Cultural Diversity
Street theatre and circus has always embraced cultural diversity. An artist is judged by the merit of their performance rather than the colour of their skin. The Festival of Fools 2005 reflects this attitude with world class artists from India and Africa brought to you as the pinnacle of street theatre. We ask you to show a real Belfast welcome when you see these wonderful performers in front of you.
