The training was part of the Creating Change Programme which aims to support groups to work together across the sectarian divide and lead positive change in their areas.

The media training gave voluntary and community organisations the chance to learn how to make their news stories stand out from the crowd.
PR Consultant Jennifer Maguire, who has worked in the voluntary sector and knows first hand what it means to work on a ‘zero budget’ worked with the participants on a range of topics including:
Participants were also given an ‘inside view’ by guest speakers Chrissie Russell (Belfast Telegraph) and Keiron Tourish and Chris Capper (BBC).
Keiron explained to the groups the importance of thinking about pictures and providing case studies when targeting television news.
Both he and Chris encouraged all voluntary and community groups to make use of what is essentially ‘our’ BBC.
Speaking at the event one participant commented:
"I gained a clear understanding of the do’s and don’ts in all media aspects. Having Chris and Keiron there to give us an inside view took away my fears and encouraged me to engage with the media."
Explaining the importance of the training WEA Development Officer Amada Biega commented,
"We recognised that one of the biggest challenges facing voluntary and community groups is getting their name out there so we decided to offer them the opportunity to learn how to make their news stories stand out from the crowd."
The Creating Change programme is designed to offer a range of training, support and facilitation and mentoring which is appropriate for the groups involved. For further information or to register an expression of interest contact Amanda Biega on (028) 7136 9947 or email amanda.biega@wea-ni.com.
Applications are welcome from groups interested in or furthering their cross community work with experienced mentors and facilitators.
