International focus on Northern Ireland this month continues as experts from more than a dozen countries gather in Belfast for the Victim Empowerment Conference Thursday, 22 May at the Europa Hotel.
Hosted by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland and Foundations for Peace, the conference will bring together experts from conflict areas around the world to explore the role of victims and survivors of conflict, in peacebuilding
Fr Michael Lapsley from South Africa is the keynote speaker at the conference
Victims empowerment is a key component of conflict transformation, and speakers include Fr Michael Lapsley (South Africa), Robi Damelin (Israel/Palestine), Dr Oscar Rojas (Colombia), Avila Kilmurray (Northern Ireland) as well as representatives from Serbia, Sri Lanka, Colombia, and beyond.
An 80-page publication highlighting best practice in victims empowerment and peacebuilding, including case studies from around the world, has been prepared by Grainne Kelly, VEP Coordinator at the Community Foundation. The publication will be launched at a pre-conference dinner, 21 May at the Europa Hotel.
Established in 1979, the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland is an independent grant-making organisation. It manages a broad portfolio of funds and programmes that address social exclusion, poverty and social injustice. The Community Foundation for Northern Ireland is a founding member of Foundations for Peace, a global network of independent, non-partisan indigenous funders working to build peace within their respective countries.
