Brainwaves NI: making a difference

Brainwaves NI Small Logo

Find out about Brainwaves NI, an organisation which supports people who have had a brain tumour.

In 1994 two brain tumour patients, seeing the lack of support for themselves and other patients once they were discharged from hospital, decided to set up a group which would provide that support. The result was Brainwaves NI.

It was specifically set up to supply whatever help it could for brain tumour sufferers, adults and children alike, their families and carers.

Although we have contacts with other similar groups outside NI, our main concern is for those in NI who are directly or indirectly affected by brain tumour illness.

SUPPORT GROUP

We meet on the second Wednesday of each month (excepting July, August and December). Our meetings are held in the Samuel Irwin Lecture Theatre at the Royal Victoria Hospital (beside the A&E department) from 7.30pm. There is wheelchair access and a lift.

During our short existence we have managed to provide the kind of support envisaged by the co-founders of the group. We will continue to do what we can for those who request our help.

We have contributed to research and have provided equipment for the neurology ward of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Anyone who has been diagnosed with a brain tumour is welcome to attend our meetings. We also welcome any member of the patient’s family or carers. At these meetings, you will find people who can empathise with your problems and a sympathetic ear.

Those who work on behalf of Brainwaves NI are volunteers and have been directly or indirectly affected by this illness.
