Local mental health charity celebrate ten years of good ‘CAUSE

CAUSE for Mental Health recently ‘celebrated’ their tenth anniversary. Founded on 6 April 1995, for the last decade CAUSE has provided practical and emotional support to thousands of carers and families of people who suffer from serious mental illnesses such as severe depression, manic depression (bi-polar disorder) and schizophrenia.

To coincide with the Charity’s tenth anniversary, CAUSE staff and carers met a number of Mayors throughout Northern Ireland to raise awareness of the Charity’s work. The meetings also provided CAUSE with the opportunity to inform elected representatives about the importance of the Charity’s work and CAUSE's achievements over the last decade.

Commenting on CAUSE reaching this milestone, Marie Crossin - the Charity’s Chief Officer- said:

“Even in the 21st century, people with mental illness and their carers and families experience disadvantage and prejudice. Carers are often referred to as the ‘forgotten army’ and feel excluded and isolated. CAUSE offers a listening ear to local carers and provides information about services and support. We sincerely hope that our ongoing work, and special events planned during our tenth anniversary, will increase awareness of the dedicated support available to local carers.”

Other planned events during the year include a Golf Classic at Lisburn Golf Club in September, and a Christmas Business Lunch at Parliament Buildings, Stormont on 14 December. Already this year, Belfast born singer Brian Kennedy has recorded a special BBC NI ‘Appeal’, while UTV Community Service Announcements are currently helping raise awareness of CAUSE's work.
