petalsBelfast Solidarity event with the Burmese people

Saturday 6 October 2007, 1.00 to 1.45pm

This Saturday Trócaire, ICTU, Amnesty International and NICVA are calling on the public as well as all organisations and individuals concerned with the plight of the Burmese people, to join them in a solidarity event from 1.00pm at Queen’s Bridge, Belfast (beside Beacon of Hope sculpture, Thanksgiving Square at Laganside) .

The event is scheduled as part of an international day of solidarity and will mirror other such gatherings in the UK and around the world where monks or other religious and community leaders will scatter petals from a bridge into a river (the bridge is to symbolise the desire for reconciliation, the petals the lives of the Burmese people currently at risk).

Burmese MonkOur messages:

  1. The people of the world stand with the people of Burma
  2. The International Community/ the UK and Irish governments must do more/keep the pressure on until the military crackdown ends and all political prisoners are released

The event will serve as a photo-op for local media and will be addressed briefly by speakers with experience of work in Burma and up to date developments on the ground. Attendees are encouraged to wear red clothing or a red arm / wrist / head band in an additional gesture of solidarity.

Invitations to attend are being sent to political parties, religious leaders, community leaders and key local figures.
