Black necked swan cygnets hatch out at Castle Espie to delight Easter visitors

The only black necked swans in Northern Ireland have given birth at Castle Espie to three cygnets. Visitors over the Easter period are expected to flock to see this rare and beautiful family.

Black necked swans are from South America and are distinguished from native swans by their black necks which contrast sharply with the white feathers of the rest of their body.

Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust staff are delighted with the new brood. Reserve Manager Kerry Mackie said "We are very pleased with this breeding success, only the second time this species is known to have bred in Northern Ireland. The babies are so cute that they are sure to delight the crowds this Easter".

Other signs of Spring abound at the beautiful Castle Espie grounds with lots of ducklings now beginning to hatch out. The centre is open every day over the Easter period.

Other family activities this Easter at Castle Espie include:

  • a self guided family Easter trail every day
  • giant egg making from 2-4pm on Friday 25 and Saturday 26
  • Easter Party on Sunday 27 March
  • facepainting.

For further information or for photo opportunities of the cygnets contact Emma Meredith or James Orr on 028 91 874146.
