Run a half marathon to help Aware Defeat Depression

Aware is appealing for people to run for us in this year's Derry half marathon to raise awareness of depression and funds for our community based services for people with depression.

Depression is the most common form of mental illness experienced by 1 in 4 of us, yet it is still a taboo subject in our society. Aware is calling on people to put on a running vest for us and ake part in this years Derry half marathon on 08 September to raise awareness of depression and show support for those who experience it.

By taking part and we want the public to understand that depression is an illness which is both treatable and preventable and that no one should put up with depression in silence.

About Aware Defeat Depression

Aware Defeat Depression host a free support group meeting every Tuesday from 7.30pm in their Derry and Belfast offices. These are open to anyone who needs help to overcome their depression. Carers are also welcome.

Why do a half marathon?

There are 20 other similar support groups across the province and their details can be obtained by ringing our information and support helpline on 08451 202 961. To keep the support groups and helpline open we need funds, so we are asking for £40 sponsorship if you can manage it or if you can't take part, a donation.

Exercise is good for all of us, but the old adage healthy body, healthy mind is very true for those with depression and this is another reason why we are calling for people to run or walk with us in this years 1/2 marathon.

Registration

Entry costs £13.00 per individual or £35.00 per relay team of three. Registration forms and cheques should be returned to the race organisers at Derry City Council. Details are available on their website or from Maureen Allen at Lisnagelvin Leisure Centre in Derry.
