A new directory has been published to promote voluntary and community groups in Lisburn.

Attendees at the launchIs there a youth club in my area? Hoe ydo I get in touch with my local resident’s association? Where can I find local training?” A new directory called 'Lisburn’s Community and Voluntary Group Directory' provides the answers to these kinds of questions.

The directory has a comprehensive listing of more than 130 voluntary and community organstions in the Lisburn City Council area.

It was recently launched by Lisburn Community Network to a large audience of voluntary and community employees and volunteers.

Janette Osborne, network coordinator, explained that the directory is a response to the needs of local groups.

These groups spoke of the difficulties they encountered in trying to find out who else is working in the sector in Lisburn and what services they provide. This was emphasised still further by conversations with people living in the various areas of Lisburn who did not belong to a local community or voluntary group but who wanted to know what existed in their area”.

Speaking at the launch, Jacquie McQuillan from Halftown Resident’s Association and a member of the Network’s steering group, said that the Directory would prove a useful tool for community workers across Lisburn.

“It paints a picture of the wide range of voluntary and community groups out there and the many, many services they provide and activities that they are involved in”.

At the launch, the audience heard about the Network's activities. Its future plans include a new website (www.lisburncommunitynetwork.com) that will include an online version of the directory, links, news and a discussion forum.
