Arts organisations in Northern Ireland are again being encouraged to keep accessibility high on the agenda. ADAPT NI's Universal Accessibility Project is open for business.
ADAPT NI in association with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland will continue facilitating the highly successful Accessibility Programme. The project promotes universal accessibility, raises awareness in disability equality and ultimately will increase participation by disabled people in arts and cultural activities.
The 2005-06 programme will include an incentive grants scheme, accessibility training and information and networking.
Incentive grants scheme
£300,000 has been committed to assist the provision of access improvements. Grants for small-medium scale projects, ranging from £500 to £10,000, on a sliding scale of up to 75% of overall expenditure. The grants are intended primarily for arts venues and will include heritage, community and leisure venues that have an established arts agenda. Obvious items for consideration are ramps, handrails, lifts, wayfinding signs, information in non-standard formats, induction or infra-red hearing systems, signed performances etc. Other essential or innovatory features will be considered.
Accessibility Training
The support package offered to grant recipients will continue to include in-house accessibility training for venue staff and volunteers.
Information & Networking
Access 400 – ADAPT’s on-line information service provides important current accessibility details for venues across N Ireland.
However some arts organisations are still inadvertently breaking the law! Disabled people have a right to be involved in the arts as audience members, artists and participants – the grants are a practical step towards breaking down some of the barriers that are preventing involvement. ADAPT will host 7 Regional Accessibility Clinics, to support local arts organisations undertaking access improvements.
