Anglo Irish Bank pledges £35,000 to promote peace and understanding.

Efforts to encourage tolerance and understanding between young people from both communities received a fresh boost this morning as Anglo Irish Bank announced a £35,000 donation to NICE - the Northern Ireland Children's Enterprise.

Anglo – which donated the sizeable sum as part of its annual corporate giving initiative – chose NICE for its commitment to developing peaceful futures. Founded in 1978 as a US/NI initiative, NICE runs non-political initiatives aimed at turning old prejudices into new and lasting friendships.

Making the donation on behalf of Anglo Irish Bank Ciaran McAreavey, Head of Anglo Irish Bank’s Belfast office said:

“Anglo Irish Bank is proud to support NICE and the valuable work that it carries out with our young people. Northern Ireland’s future lies in the hands of these young people and building new futures is fundamental to our business.

“We fund developments which are changing the physical landscape of Northern Ireland for good. With this donation, we now hope to make some contribution to our social landscape by fostering the tolerance and understanding necessary for continuing prosperity in Northern Ireland.”

Accepting the donation on behalf of NICE Carmel McCavana, NICE Executive Director said:

“We are extremely grateful to Anglo Irish Bank for this generous donation. These funds will be a significant boost to our project, helping us broaden and deepen our efforts to bring together young people from all communities in a bid to develop respect, tolerance and above all – friendship.”
