1. NICVA Research Event - Understanding Neighbourhood Statistics

Do you need to profile your area? Do you need statistical information for a funding application or a community audit? Do you need to highlight areas/pockets of deprivation or weak community infrastructure?

The Northern Ireland Neighbourhood Information Service (NINIS) is a website offering free access to Census statistics, other Government statistics (eg education, health, etc) and also offers access to the Noble Measures of Deprivation. Check ward-level statistics on your own area, or any area in Northern Ireland by simply typing in a postcode. This site provides access to all the statistics you will need at the touch of a button. The site can be found at http://www.ninis.nisra.gov.uk/ .

In addition to NINIS there is the NICA (Northern Ireland Census Access) website which provides access to the full range of results from the 2001 Census for a variety of geographical areas ranging from Northern Ireland as a whole down to each of the 5,022 Census Output Areas in Northern Ireland. The site can be found at http://www.nicensus2001.gov.uk/ .

NICVA is hosting an information and awareness-raising session on both these web-based resources. The event will take place in NICVA’s offices on 30 June 2004 between 11.00am and 1.00pm. Please register for this event by 25 June 2004 by contacting Stephen Reynolds on Telephone Number 028 9087 7777 or by Email Address Stephen Reynolds .

2. Telephone Helplines Association needs your help!

Do you provide a service using the telephone and work in the fields of health or social services?

Do you receive funding from the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety? If so, Telephone Helplines Association wants to hear from you.

With generous funding from Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, THA is pleased to announce the development of a year-long research project to ascertain a complete picture of service provision by phone across Northern Ireland. The project will have three stages:

  • A helpline benchmarking report.
  • For the first time in Northern Ireland asking helpline callers their opinion.
  • The development of guidelines for commissioners and funders of helpline services.
  • There will be a brief information session in NICVA Resource Centre on Thursday 8 July 2004 at 2.30pm, allowing you to find out more information on the project as a whole and how you can take part.

For more information contact Graeme Caul, Development Manager for Scotland and Ireland, on Telephone Number 0845 120 3767 (ext 7852).

3. e-CIVICUS: a free service to spread your civil society news.

CIVICUS, the world alliance for citizen participation, has improved its fortnightly e-newsletter, e-CIVICUS, which is currently being disseminated to over 6000 subscribers worldwide. It now includes a ‘Members News’ section which is entirely dedicated to CIVICUS members. In this section we raise awareness of member organisations, profiling their events, news, advocacy campaigns and useful resources. This is an entirely free service. All CIVICUS ask is that you forward your news to them at least a week before their dissemination date. To see a recent issue of the newsletter, visit our website at http://www.civicus.org/ .

You can email, Claudia Pillay at Email Address claudia@civicus.org with all your latest news.

4. NICVA Link Awards

The NICVA Link Awards for 2003 to 2004 have been completely revised and updated to ensure they properly reflect the nature of the relationship between businesses and the voluntary and community sector today.

There are six new categories which will showcase the very best in local business and voluntary and community sector partnerships and links. There are awards specifically for nominations made by small and medium sized organisations which may have more limited resources, making the support they receive all important. The closing date for nominations is 28 July 2004.

The main aim of CYP is to ensure that as many children and young people as possible have the opportunity to participate in programmes of creative arts activities, in contexts of their own choosing, and across all art forms.

The CYP programme will soon be available on line at http://www.cypni.org/ – a site which will provide a database of arts projects and activities for youth organisations.

7. Count Me In

Save the Children and Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities (NICEM) have produced a report called Count Me In, which analyses the views and experiences of young people from minority ethnic communities here.

The report was commissioned by the Youth Council for Northern Ireland because of the concern that generally, children from minority and mixed ethnic backgrounds do not access provisions and services outside their own communities.

The report makes 15 recommendations on how the rights, interests and the representation of children from minority communities can be mainstreamed within Northern Ireland communities and society.

The young people interviewed also wrote a shorter booklet called, Think of Me, Think of You, which will be used as a training resource for those working with children and young people. Count Me In is available from Save the Children and NICEM, priced £10.

Think of Me, Think of You is available from Save the Children free of charge.

For further information please contact Christine King or Felicity Templeton at Save the Children on 028 9043 1123.
