Oonagh McCallan, project manager at Mid Tyrone Accessible Community Transport Ltd, explains how her organisation is meeting the transport needs of rural areas.

Mid Tyrone Accessible Community Transport logo Mid Tyrone Accessible Community Transport Ltd (MTACT) aims to provide reliable, affordable and above all, accessible transport for those who otherwise are unable to access mainstream public transport. This is either due to their location, because there is no public service provision in the area or because they cannot access transport due to their physical disabilities.

The provision of this transport is important for the access of vital services whether they are medical, educational, social or recreational and so enhance the quality of life for the individuals we serve.

We strive to target social need and to fight against social exclusion and the marginalisation by ensuring that all individuals are equally empowered and enabled to access the services being provided regardless of age, disability, gender, race or religion.

We cater for individuals and voluntary and community groups, those with learning and physical disabilities, senior citizens, parents with young children, youth and those with a low income.

We provide a range of services to meet the needs of all members throughout the Omagh District Council area. Our staff strive to best meet the needs of all passengers by providing a door to door, user friendly service.

Our core services include

  • community group minibus hire (also available for self–drive)
  • Buzz a Bus (door to door service to and from Omagh town)
  • Social Car Scheme (volunteer drivers use their own cars to transport individual passengers to and from their destination)
  • Youth Link (A service for the youth of the area to access leisure, recreational and social facilities).

All trips are subject to demand and availability.

MTACT is an affiliated member of the Community Transport Association (CTA). It is our policy to endeavour to meet their voluntary code of practice, and ensure that Mid Tyrone Accessible Community Transport Ltd offers a high quality, professionally operated service which focuses on driver and passenger safety.

Volunteers

We offer a range of volunteering opportunities for the local people, including volunteer driving for our Social Car Scheme or training to become a minibus driver or passenger assistant.

One volunteer scheme is MiDAS (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme). This project trains volunteers to become drivers for their voluntary and community group, therefore reducing the cost of hiring the minibuses even further.
