New Member: Belfast Exposed Photography

Since it began in 1983, Belfast Exposed Photography has focused on community photography and has worked with over 600 groups in Northern Ireland. The ethos of the organisation is that ‘photographic seeing’ can promote self esteem and foster social and political perspectives.

In 2003 a new gallery was opened in the city’s Cathedral Quarter. It is Northern Ireland’s only dedicated venue for contemporary photography.

The new venue includes:

• a 7 x 20m gallery for the exhibition of contemporary photography
• a black and white darkroom for workshops
• image library and archive
• eight person Apple Mac digital suite.

Community Workshops

Photography can empower local communities by encouraging individuals to reflect on their past, record their present and highlight their concerns.

Participants can explore their creativity and collaborate with others. The workshop process can help to develop and individual’s communication, problem solving and interpersonal abilities.

Workshops are tailored to each participating group. Belfast Exposed offers a free initial consultation to ascertain the aims and objectives of a group and to advise them on project planning and fundraising. Costs differ according to the project and number of participants.

Belfast Exposed Archive

Belfast Exposed had created an archive of over 500,000 community images which document social history in Northern Ireland through the eyes and lens of its principal actors; communities themselves. Online technology, categorisation and digitisation are making this archive increasingly accessible to the public.
