Thursday 6 November saw the launch of a Health & Homelessness position paper developed by Simon Community NI.
Simon Community NI consider that having and maintaining good health is a critical factor in everyone’s lives. Everyone who is homeless should therefore have the right to a permanent home and the necessary health care to enable them to realise their full potential. The Position Paper makes a series of recommendations that aim to improve the standard of health we offer to this vulnerable group.
Carol O’Bryan, Chief Executive of Simon Community commented:
Health care can play a key role in reducing the harm that homelessness can have on an individual's health and helping a person sustain a permanent home within the community. Simon Community aspire through the publication of the paper that in the reorganisation and rationalisation of health services homeless people are regarded as a priority group”.
Simon Community Northern Ireland actively responds to the needs of homeless people through initiatives aimed at prevention, provision and progression to independent living. It provides a comprehensive service to homeless people in 20 locations throughout Northern Ireland including direct access hostels, leaving care services and community support services.
Last year over 3,200 people approached Simon Community Northern Ireland for accommodation, of which over 50% were aged 25 years and under.
