Over 130 local business people attended the launch of the 2008 Greater Newry Area Business Awards.

Wendy Austin speaking at the launch of the Greater Newry Area Business Awards singled out one award for special mention.

“It is typical of the self help attitude of Newry people that they have included among this year’s 20 award categories a Best Social Enterprise Award”

BBC Radio Ulster’s Wendy Austin, who will also preside over the presentation of the awards in May, was on hand to officially launch the biggest Business Awards event in Northern Ireland. The Business Awards will recognise and reward business excellence across the business community throughout the Greater Newry Area. Participating businesses will benefit from enhanced community spirit, increased consumer confidence, greater support, networking and PR opportunities within the local business community.

Sponsored by Social Enterprise Newry & Mourne the Best Social Enterprise Award is designed to recognise and celebrate the success of any social enterprise in the area, which is trading to achieve social aims above profit maximisation.

The winner of this category will be able to demonstrate to the judges how their ethical business practises benefit society through reinvestment or addressing social issues within the community.

Entrants will be asked to give evidence of:

A positive and measurable impact of their activities on society.
An innovative approach to business operation or how social needs have been addressed.
Sustainability and plans for future growth.

“Social Enterprise in Newry means real business”

stated Stephen McClelland of Social Enterprise Newry & Mourne,

“this year local social enterprises will share the platform with private sector businesses as equal partners in an inclusive, vibrant local economy. This is further evidence of the real contribution that social enterprise makes to the economy of Newry & Mourne.”

The awards will take place on Wednesday 23 May 2008 in the Canal Court Hotel, Newry.
