Media Ireland which broadcasts Newry’s only local Community Radio Station IUR-fm on 101.4FM and the local Community Television Channel, Newry.TV, won a top award at the recent Greater Newry Business Awards.

The Greater Newry Area Business Awards 2008 has been extremely successful to date. The judges (Spotcheck) received 442 entries from almost 220 companies throughout the Greater Newry Area, making this the largest business awards competition on the island of Ireland.

The company won the top Social Enterprise Award for Armagh, Craigavon, Banbridge, Down and Newry & Mourne District Council areas in the awards run by Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade. The award was presented at a Gala Presentation dinner attended by 450 people in the Canal Court. The awards were judged independently by Newtownabbey based Spotcheck Consultants and the Social Enterprise which only launched in October 2007 under Invest NI's Social Entrepreneurship Programme, beat off stiff competition from 18 established social economy businesses.

Seán Óg Mac Braoin, Chairman of Media Ireland, said:

“This is a real testament to the effort put in by all our volunteers and small staff team. We’re obviously delighted at the award which reflects the rapid growth in listeners and viewers and proves that local people want to listen to and watch local people To win such a prestigious award so early in our development will serve to encourage even more people to get involved and tune in. We’re simply thrilled.”Media Ireland is currently working towards the launch of its second community radio service in Belfast where it will be the last citywide FM license before digital switchover after 2017.

Stephen McClelland from the Newry & Mourne Enterprise Agency led Social Economy Newry and Mourne programme who sponsored the Award, said:

“The social economy is one of the fastest growing sectors in the economy and it is fitting that the prestigious Greater Newry Business Awards should have this as one of their categories. Social Enterprise Newry and Mourne (SENAM) has been a key initiative of the Local Strategy Partnership funded by the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation to develop and expand the sector. We were amazed at the number and quality of nominations for this the largest geographic award and, although we were independent of the judging panel, we were delighted that Media Ireland was the winner as we have worked closely with the voluntary Board of Directors to establish the firm as a shining example of what can be achieved by community media both locally and nationally”.
