HURT delivering OCN in drugs & substances

Local support group HURT are facilitating an OCN course on drugs and substances to the community including schools, Youth groups, parents, community groups & Health Professionals in many geographic areas.

HURT are working in partnership with FASA (Forum for Action on Substance Abuse) to deliver the accredited training who have been providing the OCN training for many years. HURT are now offering an accredited OCN course in drugs and substances in level 1 and 2 to the community in partnership with FASA.

The OCN course (Both level 1 and 2) is a new facility available at HURT which commenced in January 2007 and will continue on an ongoing basis. Training can take place at organisations premises or alternatively at HURT’s offices in 14, Clarendon Street, Derry.

The Accredited courses provide an insight into drugs & substances which cover information on the dangers associated with substance abuse, signs and symptoms of those using substances and legal issues related to possession etc.

Details for the course are as follows:

OCN Level 1

The OCN level 1 class is both informative yet highly interactive attaining the participant to 3 credits. Level 1 is ideal as an introduction to drugs and alcohol awareness, with less work to be completed.

The course consists of 6 x 1.5 hr sessions and there is a minimum class number of 10 participants. This course covers information on drugs, drugs classifications, dangers and characteristics on drugs and alcohol. It also includes group exercises matching drugs to specific statements, and visual displaying of drugs. Information on the law is also covered as is health, social and community dangers of drugs and alcohol. It discusses the difference of classified and unclassified drugs and the stages of drug abuse.

Fees incurred are £100 per person.

OCN Level 2

Level 2: Is ideal for those requiring more advanced information on drugs and alcohol which builds upon the learning from level 1. It consists of 10 weeks x 3 hr slots: attaining 8 credits at Level 2, with a minimum of 10 participants.

There is a lot more work required of the participant including 2 essays, completion of fact-sheets on each classification of drug, video analysis to carry out, dangers of specific drugs, and effects of drugs on the individual, community and family. The course covers detailed physical effects of drugs on the body, opinions towards drug-related issues,
first aid procedures, attitudes and values and community responses.

Fees incurred are £250 per person.

HURT, support individuals with drugs and alcohol problems & their families, providing them with a combination of emotional support and Complementary therapies to assist them to reach the road to recovery.

HURT's recent class participating in OCN level 1 was declared a tremendous success with Youth Net Programme involving Inishowen Youth Service, Inishowen Partnership and StrathFoyle in February 2007, held at Tullyarven Mill, Buncrana.

Debbie Keys, Project worker at HURT commented that 'HURT thoroughly enjoyed delivering the programme and were delighted with evaluations'.

Feedback from participants was extremely positive including: ‘It will help me to do what I want later on in life’, ‘It was easy to understand’ ‘It was an eye-opening’, ‘really really brilliant’ and ‘I enjoyed all the knowledge I gained about drugs’. Evaluations also revealed; ‘I enjoyed sharing experiences and listening to everyone’s opinions…It will make me think differently in the future, I learned a lot of things which I did not know’.
