International Day of Persons with Disabilities

CommunityNI.org Small Logo

Annually on 3 December, this UN declared day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and seek support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities.

Dignity and justice for all of us is the theme of this year's International Day for Persons with Disabilities, as well as for the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Annually on 3 December, this day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and seek support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities.

It also seeks to illustrate the benefits of making sure that people with disabilities are included in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Events will be taking place locally to mark the day, so if your organisation is planning anything, don't forget that you can submit the information yourself by using the buttons or links on the Community NI home page.

Disability Action will be celebrating the Day by hosting a Panel Debate and Luncheon in the Hilton Hotel, Belfast. The event will be chaired by BBC journalist William Crawley while panellists include Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, Monica McWilliams, Chief Executive of the Equality Commission, Evelyn Collins and Manager of the Centre on Human Rights for People with Disabilities, Dr Colin Harper.

The panel debate itself will focus on the topic 'Convention on the Rights of persons with Disabilities - the Northern Ireland context', and will run from 12.30-2.30pm followed by a formal lunch.
