Will more funding be diverted to the London Olympics?

Is it possible that more funding will be diverted from existing programmes in the voluntary and community sector to the London Olympics in 2012, this time as part of Olympic themed cultural programmes and other activities as part of the run up to the games?

Details are emerging of the Cultural Olympiad which the London 2012 organising committee are planning with support from various agencies. Funding for the Cultural Olympiad could well come from the Legacy Trust as it is expected to be endowed with £40 million of National Lottery and Government funds. However it is not clear where all the funds to pay for activities will come from. Will the National Lottery distributors be obliged to commit funds to Olympic-themed programmes as part of the Cultural Olympiad? Will exchequer funds in current programmes be diverted to Olympic initiatives to top-up budgets? This remains to be seen.

Among the activities being planned for the Cultural Olympiad will be a World Festival of Youth Culture, a World Cultural Festival and 2012 Carnival. On the heritage theme there will be an International Exhibitions programme to “reflect the theme of London and the UK Welcoming the World.”

In the field of arts the Arts Council of Northern Ireland its sister council in Scotland, Wales and England will support a programme through which artists join with young people and communities in a UK-wide celebration of our national life.

The BBC will project manage a 2012 Sounds! Programme which will offer one over-riding, simple, principle for music activity in all genres: new opportunities for young people to participate in great music making and lead to a legacy of sustained music development.

Other plans include an International Shakespeare Festival, Film and Video Nation, a network of external giant video screens called Live Sites and a celebration of Disability Arts and Sports to mark the first day of Paralympic Games competition.

Details of the Cultural Olympiad are available from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport website www.culture.gov.uk.
