NI Executive urged to 'Keep the Promise'

There was cross-party support for action to end child poverty at an event at Stormont recently, organised by Child Poverty Alliance NI.

Almost one in three children in Northern Ireland lives in poverty. Although the NI Executive and Westminster Government have committed to halving child poverty by 2010, with the 'credit crunch' and rising cost of living, it is predicted that the numbers of children in poverty will increase, rather than decrease over the next few years.

Pictured left to right are Jim Shannon DUP, Martina Anderson Sinn Fein, Pat Ramsey SDLP, Kieran McCarthy Alliance and Danny Kennedy UUP, who each signed a campaign card, pledging their support for 'Keep the Promise' and to ending child poverty in Northern Ireland.

More than 1,400 people here have already signed up to the 'Keep the Promise' campaign - calling on the Prime Minister and Northern Ireland Executive to hold to the commitments they have made and put in place actions to end child poverty in NI.

The initiative is being supported by all the political parties here.

The Child Poverty Alliance is an alliance of organisations working together to ensure that the UK Government and NI Executive achieve their targets of halving child poverty in Northern Ireland by 2010 and eradicating it by 2020. Members include: Action for Children, Barnardo's, CiNI, Disability Action, Gingerbread, the Law Centre, Life Start, Mothers Union, NIAPN, NICCY, NICVA, Parents Advice Centre, Playboard, Quaker Service, Rural Community Network, Save the Children, Shelter NI, Youth Net .

The Keep the Promise campaign is a UK-wide campaign led by the London-based End Child Poverty Coalition. It is culminating in a rally at Trafalgar Square on 4 October where 10,000 people will call on Gordon Brown to keep his promise to end child poverty.
