Belfast City Council is reminding people that the final call for entries to its `Brighter Belfast Environmental Awards 2006` is fast approaching with the closing date being 4pm on Friday, September 29.

The Council organises the `Brighter Belfast Environmental Awards` in recognition that protecting and enhancing the environment is a partnership between the city and those who live, work and play in it.

It is calling on any group, individual or business which has contributed to making the city a brighter place to apply for an award and share their success with others.

Award Categories will include the:

  • Anti-litter
  • Business and Community Partnership
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
  • Schools Environmental
  • Nature Conservation

We are delighted to be hosting the Brighter Belfast awards for the third year running

said Caroline Briggs, Community Awareness Manager, Cleansing Services.

“They have proven to be a fantastic way to allow everyone to highlight their efforts and perhaps learn from what other organisations are doing as well as encouraging civic pride. Prizes will be awarded to the most creative, innovative and effective environmental projects, irrespective of their budget.”

“And it has been made even easier for groups and schools to apply, simply fill out the application form at www.belfastcity.gov.uk/brighterbelfast and submit it online.”

Nominees from each category will be invited to a prestigious presentation ceremony which will be held on Wednesday, November 15 in Belfast City Hall.

A specially designed trophy and £500, to be spent on material or equipment that will benefit the winning organisation and help it continue with its environmental work, will be given as part of the prize.

Winners from last year included Translink, Fleming Fulton School and the Happy Hedgehog Rescue Centre.
