Action Cancer has revealed updated plans for its new £650,000 Big Bus service which will provide a state of the art mobile cancer detection unit for NI from September onwards.
FACTS
Over the next twenty years cancer rates are set to increase by as much as 54%.
The Big Bus will visit 200 locations a year in every part of NI and will be targeted to areas where people are in most need of the service.
The bus will be a 14 metre long articulated unit . It will house counselling and complementary therapy rooms, a digital mammography (breast screening), a training suite, hi-tech computer terminals and a creche.
It will be the first service of its kind in the UK and Ireland. The Big Bus will be self sufficient and accessible with an internal generator, toilets and a lift for disabled users.
PARTNERSHIP
Action Cancer is supported by the independent retail group SuperValu, a partnership which has won awards in the past such as the NICVA Link Award.
Investment in the Big Bus will amount to £1.1million in the first three years, with SuperValu funding £252,000 of the capital cost and the full running costs for the first three years.
David Pollock from Musgrave SuperValu-Centra (NI) helped make the announcement about the new service. He said, "SuperValu is now in its fifth year of partnership with Action Cancer in support of the charity's mobile services and it is a logical step for us to sign up as the main sponsor of the Big Bus.
"We are extremely proud to be part of this amazing new service and proud also to help Action Cancer make an impact on the health and wellbeing of local communities throughout NI."

Geraldine Kerr, Action Cancer's head of professional services, explained that organising appointments for the new service is now a priority "We intend to have a strategically targeted schedule ready for the mobile's launch in September." she said.
