Citizens Advice (CAB) has given a broad welcome to the advice and information strategy launched this week by DSD Minister David Hanson MP.
CAB Northern Ireland chief executive, Derek Alcorn, said the plan, A Strategy for Supporting Delivery of Voluntary Advice Services to the Community, clarified for both parties "what is being funded and what is being expected".
ESSENTIAL SERVICE
In his announcement, Mr Hanson said the provision of free, independent advice was an essential element of any society, but that the service must be delivered in a way that best meets the needs of its users.
He said, "The strategy will provide considerable challenges for the voluntary advice sector in reducing duplication across their services and fostering a spirit of cooperation amongst providers."
VALUE FOR MONEY
Mr Alcorn emphasised, however, that the advice agencies are one of the most efficient parts of the voluntary sector with an average cost of £10 per enquiry.
CAB hopes the consultation will force the government to examine its role as a funder and the way advice is provided to those in areas of social need.
£500, 000 FUNDING
Mr Hanson has also announced a £500,000 cash boost for voluntary sector advice services.
The funding is to develop local advice networks, extend opening hours and make better use of technology.
The funds will be drawn from the Department for Social Development's (DSD) Community Support Programme and are to be delivered via district councils, which have been asked to match the money from rateable income.
