As part of a series of activities to celebrate Intercultural and Anti Racism Week 2008, the Equality Commission hosted the launch of Homely Planet Radio.

Homely Planet Radio teamHomely Planet Internet Cultural Radio was launched at the end of Intercultural and Anti Racism Week as a service to highlight the positive aspects of multiculturalism in Northern Ireland through music and cultural education.

The radio service will allow all communities, faith groups, schools, organisations, artists and individuals to participate in broadcasting items exploring religion, race and cultural diversity. The vision is to show how people from diverse cultures, regions and religions can contribute in a positive way, economically and socially, when we respect and have a better understanding of each other's diversity.

The radio station is the result of creative individuals and organisations from various projects crossing paths and the idea has been fermenting for some time. Homely Planet says they will challenge many mainstream views and have consciously involved a majority of people who knew nothing about radio. The reason they give for this is "because when you have no experience to compare it to, you have no boundaries and there is room for creativity."

Judging by the attendance at the event and the energy and enthusiasm evident (and catching) they are doing something right.

Listen online at www.homelyplanet.co.uk, where you can also read more about the ethos and background of the station.

Homely Planet is developed and managed by Beyond Skin.
