The Community Foundation for Northern Ireland has announced that its annual Community Awards will this year highlight the contribution of women and women’s groups and organisations. Nominations are now invited.

Each year, the Community Awards celebrate outstanding achievements of groups and individuals working in the community and voluntary sector.

Awards this year include the Progressive Award for innovative action by a group that has had a particular regional impact, the McClure Watters Award for best practice in respect of voluntary financial management, the Community Foundation Leadership Award for an individual’s contribution to her local community, and the Rural Women’s Fund grant Award(s) for a major contribution to groups or organisations.

Northern Ireland ’s largest newspapers are also each sponsoring an award. The Belfast Telegraph Difference Maker’s Award will recognise an individual woman seeking to make a difference through a peace-building or diversity project, and the Irish News Local Change Award will recognise an individual, group or organisation that is working to create positive change in society.

“The Community Awards are a great opportunity to recognise the important and life-changing work of the many community and voluntary organisations in Northern Ireland, and we are delighted that the Progressive Building Society has again partnered with us as principal sponsor,” said Mary Black, Chairperson of Community Foundation for Northern Ireland.

“This year’s theme of women and women’s group will help to highlight both the range and impact of groups and individuals across Northern Ireland who work daily to create a more just society.”

Established in 1979, the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland is an independent grant-making organisation. It manages a broad portfolio of funds and programmes that address social exclusion, poverty and social injustice.

The deadline for entries is Wednesday, 28 November 2007 and the awards will be presented at a ceremony at the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland headquarters in Belfast Friday, 7 December.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Community Foundation website at www.communityfoundationni.org or from the download box. All nominations will be treated in confidence.
