Lawrence awards for young people

NICVA Small Logo

The Philip Lawrence Awards reward outstanding achievements in good citizenship by young people aged 11 to 20.

These awards recognise contributions to the community which bring out the best in young people, empower them to take the initiative and make a real difference to their lives and the lives of others – building confidence, promoting safety and reducing crime.

Since 1997, over 85 groups have received The Philip Lawrence Award. The outstanding results have proved that the Awards have been a huge success in promoting youth involvement in local communities, social behaviour, self-esteem and continual participation in valuable neighbourhood activities.

A cash sum of £1000 is available to winners, and it’s the tenth year of the Awards that commemorate the head teacher in London who was murdered in 1995 when he went to the aid of one of his pupils.

Nominations are now open for The Philip Lawrence Awards 2007.

Could you be a 2007 Award Winner?

  • Are you aged between 11 and 20 and part of a group working to make things better in your area?
  • Are you inspiring other young people to make a difference?
  • Do you know of, or work with, a group of young people who have taken the initiative to improve their lives, and the lives of others?

Potential projects can include projects that relate to people in other countries, and those that promote respect and understanding of faiths, cultures and communities internationally. The awards focus on exemplary activities - examples of young people working together, promoting citizenship and overcoming the difficult situations some people face. The awards seek to reward those projects that will be sustained in the community, with activity largely or entirely initiated by the young people themselves.

Awards are judged against five key themes that are presented as ways of promoting citizenship. They are:

  • Combating lawlessness and violence;
  • Promoting community safety;
  • Advancing racial harmony;
  • Demonstrating good citizenship;
  • Supporting projects through schools.

The more creative or unusual the project the better, but effectiveness is important. The Awards are financed by the Government’s Home Office.

The closing date for applications is 21 September 2007.
