International Youth Day

Tuesday 12 August marks International Youth Day, so this week we hope to celebrate and focus on young people. If you are planning an event or have any news items on this theme, please let us know.

In 1999 the UN General Assembly endorsed a recommendation, originally proposed by young people, that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.

The Assembly recommended that public information activities be organised to support the Day as a way to promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth to the Year 2000 and Beyond.

"No one is born a good citizen; no nation is born a democracy. Rather, both are processes that continue to evolve over a lifetime. Young people must be included from birth. A society that cuts itself off from its youth severs its lifeline."

Kofi Annan, UN General Secretary

This Action Programme contains targets for action to be taken around the world in a wide range of areas affecting youth - areas covered include: education, employment, hunger & poverty, drug abuse and juvenile delinquency.

A major focus of the Day is practical action to further encourage the empowerment and participation of youth in the processes and decisions that affect their lives.

Here in Northern Ireland we have a Commissioner for Children and Young People, as well as many groups and organisations which support, lobby and advocate for youth. If you're one of them - use Community NI to tell other people about your work, give examples of best practice or seek support for your events. It is easy to submit items yourself using the links on the home page, or email:

Fiona Veitch, web editor, or;
John McCormick, information officer.
